NATIVE NEW ZEALAND DYES

Here in New Zealand, our natural world holds many colourful secrets. Pigments exist in the strangest of places. Natural dyes were used by Maori principally for colouring the fibres obtained from harakeke (NZ flax) and ti kouka (Cabbage tree). We acknowledge these traditions and the ancient practices of so many cultures. Extracting colour from nature in every corner of the world. By applying the fundamentals of natural dyeing to these materials only found in New Zealand, we are able to obtain these mysterious hues. While acknowledging the first peoples of this land, they're traditons, while treating mother nature with respect and care.

This Warm gold silk ribbon is achieved using Harakeke flowers, and pods.

THE ORIGINAL ALCHEMY

THE ORIGINAL ALCHEMY

Alchemy is the art of dyeing metals. With the objective being the creation of gold, silver and of course the philosphers stone. But there is also a wider range of dyeing techniques that alchemists had to apply to all of the metallic bodies (copper, tin, lead, iron, alum) in order to change their colours. We use trace elements of these metals in natural dyeing, fundamentally essential as mordants and colour shifters. Therefore, natural dyeing could be considered the most tangible form of this mysterious tradition.
